Mexico and Belize
The first stop on my Latin American travels was Mexico. I only had 4 weeks there, which in hindsight really wasn't enough.
Nevertheless, I still managed to pack a fair amount in, even if I was left wondering about everything I might have missed!
Mexico City took me by surprise - I had thought I would only last a couple of days there and then want to get out of one of the world's largest and most polluted cities, but I ended up spending 6 days there. From Mexico City I headed down to the chilled-out coastal village of Mazunte with its beautiful beaches, before heading up to a tiny mountain village by the name of San Jose del Pacifico. After a week at a Spanish language school in Oaxaca, I took up a trip up to some more smaller
villages in a nearby national park, before heading to Chiapas and San Cristobal de las Casas where I again got holed up
longer than anticipated. Four weeks goes pretty quickly in Mexico....
After Mexico I hit Belize which fulfilled all my expectations of white-sand island paradise. The highlight of my time in Belize was a 3-day, 2-night sailing-trip around uninhabited white-sand islets off the coast - camping overnight in tents, eating fish caught from the boat, drinking rum punch, snorkeling around tropical reef with fishies of 100 different colours - you really didn't want to be anywhere else! Elsewhere in Belize, I spent time down some Mayan sacrificial caves, at one of the biggest Reggae parties of the year, and seemed to eat something seafood-ish at least once a day.
